Archetype Sustainable Energy House - Kortright Centre, Vaughan

The Archetype Sustainable Energy House at The Living City Campus (located just north of Toronto at the Kortright Centre ) demonstrates viable, sustainable housing. Two semi-detached houses serve as models of the next generation of green homes. Showcasing sustainable technologies, materials and practices, and promoting a holistic approach to home and community building, these demonstration homes provide a learning facility for trades, builders, students and homeowners.

Research Projects:

A Practical Field Study in the Application of Solar Energy for Residential Installations

The objective of project was to study the feasibility of using solar energy in residential installations. The opportunity to partner with the Toronto Region and Conservation Authority and work at the Archetype Sustainable Energy House, Kortright Centre made it possible to explore new sustainable technologies and establish many other partnerships. Some of the milestones achieved in this project include:

  • Establishing the first internet connection for the House

  • Creation of an intelligent router for remote site connectivity

  • Local and remote monitoring of the photovoltaic array

  • Remote video monitoring

  • Documentation of the instrumentation and energy systems

  • Assisted in the installation and calibration of various sensors

This project was funded by the GBC Seed Funding program and a cash contribution by Dr. Sunil Nijhawan of Prolet Inc.

Intelligent Home Automation Systems: Security System Installation

Phase 1 of this project was to install a fully functional alarm system in the 2 houses at the Kortright Centre. Other technologies for video monitoring and light controls were integrated into the the system.

  • Install security system at the Archetype House, Kortright Centre (monitored by CHUBB)

  • Integrate video and home automation technologies

Intelligent Home Automation Systems: Energy Management System

This phase of the project involved integrating the security alarm with the Control4 home automation system at the Archetype House at the Kortright Centre. Both of the semi-detached units and the granny suite will be equipped with a functional monitored alarm system which is integrated with a home automation system that controls the lights and energy systems in the houses.

  • DSC Monitored Alarm System

  • Control4 Home Automation System

  • Video Camera

  • Video Monitors and Media Streaming

  • Automated Lighting System

  • HVAC Monitoring and Control

  • TED Electrical Consumption Dashboard (In-house, Web Portal and iPhone App)

  • Real time data streaming to any App

  • Twitter Feed for various house events (intrusion alarm, door opening and more)

Other projects

  • HTM intelligent camera system for remote monitoring for the parking  lot study

  • Heart Transverter Energy Management Study

  • Solar Powered Camera System to monitor Solar Panels in the field
